Substance Use
You don’t need to be at rock bottom to get help changing your substance use.
If alcohol, cannabis, or other substance use is causing problems in your life, I can help you explore its impact and decide what changes are right for you. I take a harm reduction approach to substance use, helping you identify the problems you’re experiencing and a goal that suits your life and values. Whether that means total abstinence, reducing amounts, or limiting use to certain situation, I’ll help you develop a plan that feels sustainable.
Treatment approach
When treating substance use, I use principles from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI). Together, we’ll work to understand the function use is playing in your life. For example, is it serving as a way to escape or cope with stress, to feel more confident and sociable, or filling some other need? Then, we’ll explore other ways to fulfill this purpose, e.g., by developing alternate coping strategies or reframing your thinking about the situations when you feel the urge to use. Throughout therapy, we’ll explore the role substances play in your life and how that fits or doesn’t fit with how you want your life to look. We’ll also identify strategies and plans for when challenges arise in the future, so you feel confident in your coping without returning to old habits.
